Joe Garofoli of SFGATE published a story about Sean Parker and I absolutely relish the title and intent– it’s about “Disrupting Philanthropy.”
Sean, of Napster and Facebook fame and wealth, plans to spend his 3 plus billion dollar wealth on philanthropic efforts that are large in scale- why he’d fit right as a hero in The BIG Disrupter.
Philanthropists do need to take more risks and make significant investments- in the same way that they were so successful in their business endeavors. Why? To drive significant differences, to get people out of holes they are stuck in, not just keeping them above the muck line for a moment.
Which is the whole point of The Big Disrupter prize.
Maybe Sean will be the billionaire to sponsor something like The Big- it’s like the Nobel Prize for social entrepreneurs, who are people driven to create self-sustaining organizations with a positive social purpose. ie TOMs shoes, Warby Parker, 2 degrees bars, or even Patagonia.
Or perhaps he’ll disrupt in his own big way.
Either way, in this “Good News” case, it’s tremendous when reality catches up with fiction.
